{"id":108,"date":"2023-08-09T05:08:43","date_gmt":"2023-08-09T05:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jazz4pca.org\/jazz4pca2\/?page_id=108"},"modified":"2024-04-03T14:22:57","modified_gmt":"2024-04-03T18:22:57","slug":"why-we-do-this","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/jazz4pca.org\/index.php\/why-we-do-this\/","title":{"rendered":"Why We Do This"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Drives Us?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to reports from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nvss\/index.htm\">National Vital Statistics System (NVSS)<\/a>, prostate cancer deaths amongst African-American men are higher than any other ethnic community in the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the attempt to provide more insight, the American Cancer Society reports that \u201caccess to insurance and healthcare, as well as health education, play an important role in maintaining one\u2019s health.<br>Unfortunately, it is recognized that a certain segment of African American men do not have access to these tools.\u201d Moreover, ACS notes, \u201cstill, some key statistics in the report show a continuing racial divide\u201d:<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nvss\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"722\" height=\"406\" src=\"https:\/\/jazz4pca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/USIncidenceMortalityRates.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1214 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jazz4pca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/USIncidenceMortalityRates.png 722w, https:\/\/jazz4pca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/USIncidenceMortalityRates-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 722px) 100vw, 722px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\"><em><strong>Prostate cancer is 2.4 times more deadly for black men than for white men.<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">On average, by the time black Americans are made aware that they have the disease, it is often more advanced than for newly diagnosed white Americans. There are fewer treatment options for later stage prostate cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">For all major cancers, African Americans are less likely than whites to survive five years after diagnosis \u2014 even when their cancers are diagnosed at the same stage. African-Americans, ACS continues, have \u201cless access to appropriate and timely treatment\u201d than do white Americans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">ACS concludes that its findings \u201cmakes clear there is a need for more focus on improving socioeconomic factors and providing educational opportunities that can help further lessen cancer\u2019s unequal burden on African Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">However, the morbidity rate for prostate cancer, according to NVSS, has declined nearly 50% in the African-American community since 1999; perhaps due to wellness and preventive advocacy provided by community health fairs and foundations such as Jazz For Prostate Cancer Awareness\u2122.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">Still, the question remains \u2013 why does the incidence of fatalities remain higher within the African-American community than in any other community in the United States?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What Drives Us?
